This past weekend, Dan and I packed up our stuff and moved on out to Hoogkarspel. Every year the small town located in North Holland has a kermis (fair). This year Dan and I had the pleasure of attending.
After almost two hours on the tram (streetcar) and train, we arrived at Annie, Kees, Kim and Crissy’s 50’s inspired home. Two minuets later, we were on our way to the Kermis burrel (pre-party) on bikes. I had to ride on the back of Kim’s since I have yet to master getting on and off the ridiculously huge bikes they have here! I swear everyone here is super tall. Just when I thought I reached a normal height, I am the short one again. The kermis burrel was like an outdoor kegger but with way more dancing.
The rest of the night was spent back and forth between the Schalm (Kees’s bar), another town bar, and the kermis itself. Dan, Kim and I made time to hit the swings before eating fries and krokets, which is like a pork sausage that has been deep fried. We then downed another very small Dutch beer. The Dutch love their foam. There is literary two inches on the top of every beer. By the end of the weekend Dan and I had to switch to mixed drinks.
The next day was spent sleeping, watching bed races, and drinking more Dutch beer. We did make time to eat more fries, this time with katatje oorlog sauce (yummy peanut sauce mixed with mayo!). It was awesome! We also had olie dols which are like doughnuts that are rolled in icing sugar. I’m eating horribly, but as promised, I will return to Canada super hot! Dan and I have made this our mission!! As mentioned before, everyone here is GEORGOUS!! Everyone is thin, tall, has perfect skin and wicked haircuts, white teeth and killer style. Dan and I are now average. It’s sad really.
This weekend I am going back to Hoogkarspel for the annual Volleyball weekend!! Since everyone in the town plays volleyball, I decided that I would cheer them on from the sidelines, drink in hand of course.
I feel your pain!
They also made me ride on the back of bikes plenty-a-time.
ALSO the mini fridge that Ralph and I share freezes everything!! LOL it reminds me of our fridge at China! I MISS YOU GIRLIES SOOOO MUCH!!
